Land and design

This course introduces fundamental concepts and ideas of urban design and planning starting from a historical perspective, introducing important theories to analyze and understand the dynamics and complexities that characterize the urban environment.
From the study of the Greek polis to the origins of modern town planning of Cerda and the planning theories of Le Corbusier, this course aims to develop the essential knowledge in the field of Urban planning and Design by investigating the critical role that the architecture, combined with the interdisciplinary approach of urban design, can play in creating a better and more livable and sustainable city.

The analysis of contemporary urban issues will be covered through the study of international researches. Small groups of students will prepare weekly a presentation to convey the important elements and themes described in the assigned journal article. During the course, overlaps, and boundaries between the disciplines of architecture, urban design and planning will be identified to facilitate meaningful interdisciplinary thinking and collaborations.

At the end of the course the students will submit a critical essay focused on the deepening of essential areas for urban design and planning in order to develop a critical understanding to address the complexity of today’s pressing urban challenges.
